A Stellar place to camp in Colorado…Yerts, Conestoga Wagons and Airstreams, OH MY!!!!

When I think of Memorial Day Weekend beyond the parades I think…”Finally, LET’S GO CAMPING!!!!!!”

Since being here Visit Colorado doing Iron Horse Bicycle Classic and Elephant Rock it was imperative to explore the camping in the Western Slope of Colorado. Back in the spring at Sedona MTB Festival I met Billy Beyhan, who invited me to come visit what he and his family have been doing the past 5 years at Dolores River Campground  and now I can sincerely testify that they KNOW what they are doing!!!

Billy, his wife Lainey (who deftly keeps all the logistics running smoothly while greeting guests) and their two kids Bridger and Heidi, who are out and about helping their parents on the property and are excelling at just “being kids”;) They have made heaps of improvements in their time at Dolores River Campground to make it truly a “TRAVEL DESTINATION!”

Dolores River Campground is in Dolores, Colorado (about an hour south of Telluride, Colorado and an hour west of Durango, Colorado). Camping wise you can set up your tent, roll in your RV or rent one of their cabins, Yerts or “hold your horses…renovated Conestoga Covered Wagons and vintage Airstreams (one of our loves besides bikes at Cyclelogical;)

Yes, you read correctly they have a sweet li’l “Flying Cloud” 1953 airstream and 1950 Spartanette that along with the LIFE magazines from those years…make you feel like you are Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz in the LONG, LONG Trailer here’s the movie clip:

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Qbm-T_OSa4

Then down along the tranquil and gorgeous river area they have clean, comfortable cabins as well as the Yerts and Conestoga Covered Wagons that are “Glamping” at it’s best! **check out the pics below I took while there;)

As far as amenities they are clean, well kept and modern: showers, bathrooms and launderette (which I needed to take advantage of traveling for more than a week out of our SprinterVan;) There is a playground for kids and a fun gift shop (where they sell our Cyclelogical Tshirts: BikeUSA, Fossil Fuel, and W’s Betty Bison;)

Activities-wise there are heaps and heaps of things to do hiking, mountain biking, fly fishing (saw a guest catch a nice trout while there), boating at McPhee Reservoir Colorado and touring the historical pueblo ancestral dwellings when you Visit Mesa Verde National Park.

If you need a new place to camp and Enjoy…ENJOY the outdoor beauty of Colorado then you NEED to Check them out at: http://doloresrivercampground.com/

Are you “Team Burrito, Team Taco, Team #VanLife” or ALL THE ABOVE?

One of my greatest joys since joining our Cyclelogical team are the opportunities we get to create.  I can not articulate how REFRESHING it is to be in an atmosphere that encourages being “unique, different, sarcastic, giddy and just plain silly” when it comes to hatching ideas for our apparel designs.  Inspiration can come from conversations with others over coffee early in the morning or adult beverages late at night, doodles sketched on napkins, conversations with customers/new friends at events or my favourite ideas from things we experience and see while riding out in nature or around town. **See photos of some Tshirts that were “birthed” during rides in our national parks!!!

Collaborations are even MORE FUN…not only among our team at Cyclelogical headquarters but also with friends that are “all about what we do and join the process” of creating designs.  Two such people that are a delight to bounce ideas off of are Syd Schulz and Macky Franklin, who agreed to be our first “brand ambassadors” during our 10th Anniversary celebrating Cyclelogical’s existence.

If you are not familiar with these Awesome enduro athletes you NEED to check out their webpage: https://www.sydandmacky.com/about or even their youtube site: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCu3Wc2GlCpyxGmX7N0EO5NQ/featured

One such interchange happened on one of my “worst days” of traveling.  I had been in Tucson preparing to go to Epic Rides’ 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo. Unfortunately after filling up our Mercedes Benz SprinterVan (aka my “home away from home”;) with diesel that had been tainted with gasoline (how could I have known?!) causing the fuel system to fail I was stuck at the Tucson Mercedes dealership waiting anxiously to find out whether it could be repaired in time for 24Hrs and HOW MUCH would it cost as cold rain fell;(

In the midst of that dreary day…Syd and Macky just happened to be in town and came to visit me at the dealership (what a breathe of fresh air). While we sat their talking using the dealership business center as our own “mobile office” taking advantage of the amenities they offer;) we talked about plans for future rides, vlogs&blogs and looking through some new designs as well.  We had just turned our Taco Bike into a comfortable hoodie that given the cold, wet day Syd through on to keep warm.  The funny thing is not more than a minute I would say of putting on the Taco Bike she mentioned, “ughhh…so when are you coming out with a “Team Burrito” Tshirt…we eat those more often!!” LOL

SOOOO…as a direct result of that funny exchange on a miserable day in a Tucson dealership we just came out with a Tshirt as part of our “Syd&Macky collection” called Bike & Burrito Hauler that brings in tandem our mutual love for burritos and #vanlife (http://www.cyclelogicalgear.com/bike-burrito-hauler-ms-grey-syd-macky-collection/).  Then to further support our dedication to #vanlife we did one inspired by how they pack up their vans while traveling and competing called “Van Capacity” (http://www.cyclelogicalgear.com/van-capacity-ws-purple-syd-macky-collection/).

You need to check these exclusive designs and prints we offer online based on conversations with Syd&Macky and order them…fun Tshirts worth riding in. BE MORE AWESOME check them out and enjoy your weekend!!

Clearing out the Cobwebs in my Airstream

Traveling for Cyclelogical to all our events all over California and the southwest means living hardcore #vanlife in our Sprintervan.  Admittedly it’s pretty cramped yet cozy but when I get home to my restored 1976 Ambassador Airstream…WOW, I feel like I’m living in a palace after existing in the Sprinter;)

However, the most ANNOYING thing about getting home to the Airstream are my “li’l spider friends” who use my absence as an opportunity to “expand their kingdoms” throughout.  Around the window on my plants, especially in the kitchenette area and in the bathroom (like in photos).  The worst is going for a shower or sitting down on “the throne” and getting wrapped up in cobwebs…YUCK!!!

As Spring is now here that got me thinking about “spring cleaning” and the need to clear out the cobwebs and junk in my own life.  Here’s what I like to take time to do…not just every Spring but at least monthly, if not weekly!

First, I tackle the “clutter” in my living/working spaces.  Life keeps happening at a whirlwind pace at times and it’s easy not to take time to put everything back where it should be. It’s so important to do that though. Get clean and folded clothes back in your drawers, receipts from traveling entered into spreadsheets and filed away and collect all the recyclables and actually RECYCLE them. Living in an Airstream doesn’t afford much space…so “as a rule” when I come back from an event with a new Tshirt I usually pick out an old one “to go” so that my closets aren’t overflowing with clothes I no longer wear (or fit into;)

Second, I figure out new ways to GET ACTIVE.  This can mean engaging in some physical activity, like jumping on my bike for a morning ride or even just taking more time to go to the post office on my bike and giving the Jeep a day off. It also can mean activating a project you were once passionate about that’s been on the shelf (like me and blogging;)

Last, I encourage you to take time to “share your story” with someone.  Like the cobwebs in my Airstream, as annoying as they are…they remind me that we are all interconnected.  We all are apart of a bigger web…a larger story from those who have gone behind us to those who come after us, it’s healthy to share that story.  Just this weekend at San Diego’s GranFondo, I had an amazing opportunity to get to know a young cyclist and photographer to hear his story and share mine.  There is something healthy and spring-like in doing that…helps clear out the clutter of bad things I need to “let go of” and actively practice gratefulness for the joys, experiences and lessons learned.

Enough with writing this…time to get active and clear some clutter in my office, peace!!! bs

Two of our Favourite athletes in the Mountain Biking World!!

When I started working with my college buddy, JD, who started Cyclelogical…I was not terribly familiar with the “Mountain Biking World.”  Sure, I had gone out occasionally with him and others on some “not so threatening” trails in Cali, AZ and UT but just to “have fun” (i.e. get a few bruises and scrapes) not a whole lot beyond that.  Then as I traveled to events like the Kamikaze Bike Games up at Mammoth Mountain my eyes started to open to what you MTB athletes go through and I was extremely impressed!

Then JD encouraged me to look up an MTB athlete, Syd Schulz, @sydschulzathlete and I have been “hooked” on her and Macky ever since.  In fact this morning, while drinking my coffee with coconut oil to get warmed back up after my 6am ride…I read her latest blog: https://www.sydschulz.com/mountain-biking/six-ways-to-peel-a-banana-or-a-rock-garden

She just has a great, unconquerable attitude with a the ability to just “tell it like it is” with no apology.  She has “pure moxie” as my uncle used to say. Beyond her blog and FB and Instagram, I find myself occasionally checking out Syd & Macky’s YouTube channel and absolutely LOVE this video they posted about a month ago…in which they go through their “Top 10” crashes of their 2017 season (my personal favs #7 “I made it past the part I was worried about” and #5 “Macky vs the log 😉 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoUCi2Qji00

Add to all this that they are “van life” people like myself, who enjoy traveling around, and even sport our Cyclelogical clothes at times when they are off their bikes…(https://www.instagram.com/p/BZJwCpinVcB/?taken-by=sydgschulz) (https://www.instagram.com/p/BYhXlGvnRtP/?taken-by=sydgschulz)

How could you not love them?!?!?  I encourage you to take sometime and check them out (you know in those “down times” at work when you need a to break up the monotony;) Cheers! -BS

“Be Good”…so says the Queen of Pain

This weekend I had the responsibility of representing our Cyclelogical brand at the SLO ULTRA and MTB up in Avila Beach’s Wild Cherry Canyon. Today, as I look back at the experience I would say…it was my PRIVILEGE to represent Cyclelogical at the SLO ULTRA because of the people I met: athletes, who victoriously endured their races, supportive families and friends, who cheered loudly and enthusiastically embraced them (dirty and sweat-soaked) and the other event merchants, whose camaraderie made the time fly!

One of the special guests, who rode in the dirty & grueling 28 mile Mountain Bike Race, was Rebecca Rusch, the Queen of Pain, as she’s been called for years. For over 3 decades now this 7X World Champion, whether competing individually or as part of a team, has been a dynamic athlete inspiring a countless number of people. She is more than just an
“adventure athlete”…she is also an author and activist, who excels at giving others practical advice on how to improve their performance, as well as, motivating and inspiring everyone to “be good” as her father encouraged her and her sister to be in his letters to them, as a pilot in the Vietnam War, where he was KIA.

This year through Red Bull Media House, Rusch released a full length movie, Blood Road, (http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5z4i2z) about her journey biking the entire length of the Ho Chi Minh trail (which spans 3 countries…Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam for a total of 1,200miles).  The film details, like a living journal, the intimate reasons why she endured such a complex journey and how it has and is shaping her as a person now.  All I can say is that the film is a powerful emotional and spiritual experience…even when speaking face to face with Rebecca about it that is evident.

After graduating from university, I lived and taught English in Southern China for a few years.  One of the “perks” of being a TESL teacher was the ample time off and holidays/vacations I was able to take in order to explore China and all the other surrounding Asian nations.  Backpacking and riding through countries like Vietnam and Laos, where the ravages of war decades later are STILL EVIDENT, struck me to the core and helped shape me in my early twenties…but not as much as the humble and extremely gracious people, whose smiles and generosity with what little they had, challenged my world view and helped galvanize aspects in my character that I desired to reflect!!!

Now, after just turning 41yrs old, my conversation with Rebecca and experiencing her movie “Blood Road” helped me “dust off” those lessons and memories from 20yrs ago and evaluate if I have TRULY LEARNED from them and even more importantly have “practically lived out” those lessons. If you don’t know much about Rebecca Rusch, I strongly encourage you to check out her website, make time to read her blogs and start following her on social media and seek our the movie “Blood Road” to watch…you’ll be better for it.

“Be Good”…such a simple phrase but like dynamite, it is packed with a “potential power” that can change a single life and create ripples into the lives of so many others.  I plan on taking that advice to heart…I encourage you to do the same!!!  -bs
