Two of our Favourite athletes in the Mountain Biking World!!

When I started working with my college buddy, JD, who started Cyclelogical…I was not terribly familiar with the “Mountain Biking World.”  Sure, I had gone out occasionally with him and others on some “not so threatening” trails in Cali, AZ and UT but just to “have fun” (i.e. get a few bruises and scrapes) not a whole lot beyond that.  Then as I traveled to events like the Kamikaze Bike Games up at Mammoth Mountain my eyes started to open to what you MTB athletes go through and I was extremely impressed!

Then JD encouraged me to look up an MTB athlete, Syd Schulz, @sydschulzathlete and I have been “hooked” on her and Macky ever since.  In fact this morning, while drinking my coffee with coconut oil to get warmed back up after my 6am ride…I read her latest blog:

She just has a great, unconquerable attitude with a the ability to just “tell it like it is” with no apology.  She has “pure moxie” as my uncle used to say. Beyond her blog and FB and Instagram, I find myself occasionally checking out Syd & Macky’s YouTube channel and absolutely LOVE this video they posted about a month ago…in which they go through their “Top 10” crashes of their 2017 season (my personal favs #7 “I made it past the part I was worried about” and #5 “Macky vs the log 😉

Add to all this that they are “van life” people like myself, who enjoy traveling around, and even sport our Cyclelogical clothes at times when they are off their bikes…( (

How could you not love them?!?!?  I encourage you to take sometime and check them out (you know in those “down times” at work when you need a to break up the monotony;) Cheers! -BS

Still enjoying that “Merry Christmas to me” gift…check these out!!!

Here we are almost done with the first month of January 2018…it SURE GOES FAST!!

One thing I have enjoyed immensely of all my gifts from the holidays is one that I gifted to myself. Oh, I know I’m NOT the ONLY one who ends up after all the searching in the stores and on the internet who gives into the desire of buying a “Merry Christmas to me” gift.

My favourite this year was a STELLAR custom made handle bar from  Defiance Frameworks have you heard of them yet?!  Well, let me tell you, Daniel, does awesome work up in Fritz Creek, Alaska where he crafts handle bars as he told me to “keep his sanity” up north. He’s a down to earth guy, who is an EXCELLENT craftsman!!!

When I met and spoke with him at Interbike this past September this was how he explained why he does what he does…

“I started building bikes seven years ago. The winters in Alaska are long and having a good indoor activity to occupy you time goes a long way towards helping keep you sane. As happens to most builders I started daydreaming about the next frame long before the first one was finished. I’ve been more or less steadily building since then. These days my time is split between bike related activities and working as a welder and shipwright in the marine industry (because if you want to make a living as a framebuilder, you’ve got to have a side hustle;). All in all, I get to live in an amazing place and build the kind of bikes I think are cool. So, basically, I’m living the dream.”

Honestly, I can’t say enough good things about his work!  Every time I’m on my bike now looking down at these handle bars…I still get that giddy gleam in my eye, like when I was a little tyke and saw my first bicycle behind the tree.  Funny how that never goes away the older us kids get when we make improvements on our bikes!!

Beauty from Ashes in 2018

The Jewish prophet, Isaiah, spoke of an amazing truth to encourage hearts that have endured disaster…”beauty will come from these ashes, joy will replace mourning….”

We at Cyclelogical have clung to these words the last months of 2017 for ourselves and our community.  While we are so thankful for the blessings and victories 2017 brought for our Cyclelogical business and staff…the last two months also held some bitter things.

Traveling back from an exciting time attending the El Tour De Tucson in Arizona for the first time, we got a call that our beloved dog, Hannah, had been struck by a car in our Ojai neighborhood.  Unfortunately, before we could make it back she had passed quite quickly surrounded by staff that loved her as their own.  Hannah, was the BEST FRIEND you could have and perfectly loyal companion on a ride or run.  As the years passed it was hard to see her not “lead us” on the trail anymore and instead lag behind a bit, but oh how she loved to come with us! In her memory, we have designed a “best friend” riding jersey for this spring season.

We dealt with that loss and then came the Thomas Fire in December.  Never have we experienced or seen such a radical wild fire in our years of living in California.  The flames encircled our entire community for days and spread so fiercely fast.  We will be forever grateful for the brave men and women (firefighters, police, pilots, etc…) who fought to help us keep our property and Cyclelogical headquarters (and the properties of all our staff) from destruction within 200 yards of us all.

It was the “perfect storm” as far as wild fires go constantly challenging the Cal Fire leadership as they coordinated firefighters from at least 10 other states, who sent crews. Few lives were lost and few properties compared to so many other fires this year.

We have swept and washed away the ashes here at Cyclelogical and dealt with smoke damaged apparel. We were very fortunate!!!!  Please in this New Year of 2018 take time to be mindful of ways you can help your neighbors and get to know them better…tragedies, like this Thomas Fire, have motivated us to “Be Calm and Stay Focused on the REAL PRIORITIES of Life!”

Now we wait…as we ride the trails around Ojai and our Ventura Community, we look forward to a time when all the ashen grey will be green once again…when BEAUTY and NEW LIFE will come from the ashes, it’s happened many times before, we trust it will again in 2018.

We are so grateful for all of you, who encourage and support us here at Cyclelogical, blessing to you all in 2018!!!

“Be Good”…so says the Queen of Pain

This weekend I had the responsibility of representing our Cyclelogical brand at the SLO ULTRA and MTB up in Avila Beach’s Wild Cherry Canyon. Today, as I look back at the experience I would say…it was my PRIVILEGE to represent Cyclelogical at the SLO ULTRA because of the people I met: athletes, who victoriously endured their races, supportive families and friends, who cheered loudly and enthusiastically embraced them (dirty and sweat-soaked) and the other event merchants, whose camaraderie made the time fly!

One of the special guests, who rode in the dirty & grueling 28 mile Mountain Bike Race, was Rebecca Rusch, the Queen of Pain, as she’s been called for years. For over 3 decades now this 7X World Champion, whether competing individually or as part of a team, has been a dynamic athlete inspiring a countless number of people. She is more than just an
“adventure athlete”…she is also an author and activist, who excels at giving others practical advice on how to improve their performance, as well as, motivating and inspiring everyone to “be good” as her father encouraged her and her sister to be in his letters to them, as a pilot in the Vietnam War, where he was KIA.

This year through Red Bull Media House, Rusch released a full length movie, Blood Road, ( about her journey biking the entire length of the Ho Chi Minh trail (which spans 3 countries…Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam for a total of 1,200miles).  The film details, like a living journal, the intimate reasons why she endured such a complex journey and how it has and is shaping her as a person now.  All I can say is that the film is a powerful emotional and spiritual experience…even when speaking face to face with Rebecca about it that is evident.

After graduating from university, I lived and taught English in Southern China for a few years.  One of the “perks” of being a TESL teacher was the ample time off and holidays/vacations I was able to take in order to explore China and all the other surrounding Asian nations.  Backpacking and riding through countries like Vietnam and Laos, where the ravages of war decades later are STILL EVIDENT, struck me to the core and helped shape me in my early twenties…but not as much as the humble and extremely gracious people, whose smiles and generosity with what little they had, challenged my world view and helped galvanize aspects in my character that I desired to reflect!!!

Now, after just turning 41yrs old, my conversation with Rebecca and experiencing her movie “Blood Road” helped me “dust off” those lessons and memories from 20yrs ago and evaluate if I have TRULY LEARNED from them and even more importantly have “practically lived out” those lessons. If you don’t know much about Rebecca Rusch, I strongly encourage you to check out her website, make time to read her blogs and start following her on social media and seek our the movie “Blood Road” to watch…you’ll be better for it.

“Be Good”…such a simple phrase but like dynamite, it is packed with a “potential power” that can change a single life and create ripples into the lives of so many others.  I plan on taking that advice to heart…I encourage you to do the same!!!  -bs
