Ozaukee Interurban Bike Trail

My wife and I are always looking for new places to ride, so this past weekend we did an internet search for something different from the same ole trails.

here is what we found: www.interurbantrail.us . it was a pretty short drive from our house to the trail head, so late sunday afternoon we packed up the bikes (and my new bike computer!) for what we were hoping would be a really good ride and workout.

I will give the pros and cons…as a guy who loves mtb over road biking, this is all based on perspective, as i would say a 5 min mtb ride is so much better than any day on the road…so here goes.

pros: we love the leisurely ride in and out of some really cool little towns. Cedarburg, wi is a must see at least once in your life if traveling southeastern Wisconsin (come at christmas for sure). there is also a bike shop in Cedarburg that rents bikes localmotionoutfitters.net. I remember meeting the owner a few years ago…good guy. The ride takes you over a really nice river…overall, as far as we went on the trail, it was really easy and picturesque going thru backyards, parks and past some great restaurants.

cons: I would suggest taking tips for parking from me…not the website. Not being from this area, the directions to the trailhead were not descriptive enough. I would suggest taking I43 north from Milwaukee, get off at brown deer road exit and head west for 2.5 miles. the website says to take County road Q, but we have no idea where Q was on the map!! the trailhead is right after the Audi dealership and across from the fire station. the website says the ‘power sub station’ much more difficult to find.

the trail is great for cruzing and putzing around, just not what we thought. we did about 25 miles, we rode hard, but every mile there was a stop sign and a road to cross. so by the end of our ride we were more tired from starting and stopping than we were from riding.

all in all, it’s a nice trail. it would be great for a complete day ride…from one end to the other…or for a ride with the family. it’s also great if you like to shift or need to learn how to shift.

my wife liked it, not a do again trail for me. though the trail is well maintained and a way better alternative to riding with traffic!
